2017 Champlain Valley Fair

Pentatonix, the acapella singing group, came to the Champlain Valley Fair on the last night of the 10-day festival. I’m a fan so when my sister offered to get tickets for us, you know I agreed! I don’t know that it was public knowledge at the time that Avi planned to leave the group at the end of this tour. Turns out the show in Essex Junction, VT was their last show of this tour and we were there!

The group will continue without Avi. Not sure how they plan to round out to five again, in keeping with their name. You can be sure that if they come back to Essex or even to the Bell Center in Montreal, I’ll be there!
The Champlain Valley Fair offers many other things that you would expect at any fair. But here are a few of my favorite amusements.

Mama and Baby Pigs

When we arrived, mama pig was nursing the babies, but seemed impatient. When the caretaker arrived with the ingredients to make slop, it seemed obvious that mama pig was hungry too!

Fried Foods!

I think I heard it on the radio that there was fried tacos at the fair this year. I never heard of fried tacos before, but I was game to try them. My sister and I decided to split a chicken taco knowing that we were likely to indulge in many more fair foods. Take a look at the sign pointing to “MORE FOOD” which will lead you right past Fried Dough and Fried Oreos. Two of the basic food essentials, right!?!? All these fair foods look even more enticing when neon signage lures you toward them!

Dizzy Donuts

Dizzy would always bring his donut trailer to Adam’s Apple Orchard every fall. We were regular attendees of the orchard’s annual festival so we are well aware of Dizzy’s Donuts. But new to me was bacon-sprinkled maple glazed donuts. We got a dozen, half with bacon and half without. You can see the crew producing our delectable confections.

Ugliest Cake Contest

The rules are the entire cake must be edible. These cakes have been on display for 10 days of the fair. I’m sure they looked even grosser for our last day visit! The winning cake was made by a child. Check out the dead fish carcasses lying across the winner!

More to see and do at the Champlain Valley Fair

Of course, there’s the midway — lots of rides and games to experience. You’ll find the fortune tellers, caricaturists, photo booths, free contests.
Then there are all the buildings that show entries to art contests, craft contests, agricultural contests.
Shows happen daily at the fair. Music, car derbies, magic shows and more. There’s plenty to keep you and your family amused an entire day!
