Bicycling Around the Champlain Islands

I absolutely love bicycle riding through The Champlain Islands. I’m a novice rider…meaning I ride a road bike, I carry a pack on my bike and my riding attire usually includes gym shorts and a tie-dyed t-shirt. I’m riding for the pure joy of getting some exercise while enjoying the scenery. It never gets old. I keep telling myself that one day I’ll take a longer ride…more than 20 miles. But I often choose to go out in later afternoon and want to get back for a jet ski ride or to get dinner going on the grill. That doesn’t leave time for this novice rider to accrue many miles on any one ride.

VermontVacation.com has posted a map showing all the various bike riding hot spots in the state. I pasted an excerpt showing the lower part of the Champlain Islands. Our vacation rental homes are located in Grand Isle under the Route 2 emblem that I highlighted in yellow. I have a couple of favorite short bike loops — one is about 4.25 miles and the other is just over 8 miles — and both take me to the east shore of Grand Isle. It’s a quiet ride since there’s not much traffic on the side roads. So very peaceful. No one to hear me huffing and puffing as I ride the few uphills or squealing “whee” as I coast on the downhill side. I do get strange looks from the cows though.

One of these days, Andy and I are going to ride to the south end of South Hero and take the bike ferry onto the Island Trail. I’ve ridden from Burlington to the Colchester side of the trail, but that was years and years ago. I do remember thinking it was such a wonderful place to ride having the lake on either side of the trail. Absolutely fantastic views…and level riding! Let’s hope I wake up one morning this summer and decide to start my ride early enough so that I can enjoy that area by bike again!
