US Route 2 and East Shore North Road Sign

Signs Around Us

Recently a street sign I use as a landmark for our Green Cottage guests just disappeared! Unfortunately, it does appear to be thievery. I wonder if the person or persons who took the sign had some emotional attachment to the street name. Perhaps it was the just the thrill of taking a risk that drove them.

With the missing sign on my mind and perfect late summer weather for an afternoon stroll, I decided to snap photos of signs I passed when walking to Knight Point State Park and back. I never realized there were so many signs in this 2-mile stretch!

Drawbridge Replacement Signs

With the multi-year drawbridge replacement project about a mile north of the cottage, we have a lot of new orange signs.

For those who don’t understand, “Raise Plow” is a warning to snow plow drivers.

I noticed for the first time today that the entrance to Knight Point State Park in North Hero also has a street sign. But look at this! The street sign reads “Knights Point Road” where as the State Park name is singular, “Knight Point State Park”. Isn’t that interesting?

Mariner signs

Just over the drawbridge is a canoe access. You’ll often see people dropping off their motor boats here too. Signs remind boaters to take care and avoid spreading invasive species between bodies of water.

If you’re traveling under the drawbridge by boat, you’ll see these signs that warn you how to reach the bridge tender and know when the bridge will operate.

Other Road Signs

All of this activity is on US Route 2, the main artery through the Champlain Islands. You’re likely to come across cyclists and farm equipment too.

For a state that doesn’t allow billboards, we sure do have a lot of road signs!
