Squirrel Harvests Hickory Nut

Squirrels Harvest Hickory

It’s been a parade here at The Green Cottage! The squirrels are dropping hickory nuts off the tree. By the loud bumping sounds made when the heavy hard nuts fall, I imagine there must be dents on the roof!

I’ve been watching as the team of squirrels run across the yard from north to south, heading towards the hickory trees. They climb into the trees and rustle the leaves. Then bump, clang, swish as the nuts fall to the ground. In seconds, out pops a squirrel with his mouth loaded. He then scurries across the yard from south to north and up the driveway before disappearing into the trees.

The hickory nuts are a mouthful!

This ritual has been going on all day for over a week now. I expect that there won’t be any intact hickory nuts on the ground near the hickory trees this fall. It does seem that the squirrels, and maybe even the chipmunks, are enjoying meal breaks by cracking open a few nuts along the way. Another reason to wear shoes around the lake. You never know if these sharp broken shells will be underfoot!
